No Statewide License Required

Minnesota does not require a statewide hvac technician license. Minnesota has NO statewide HVAC/mechanical contractor license, but ALL mechanical contractors must file a $25,000 bond with DLI. Cities may require local licensure or 'competency cards' for HVAC workers. Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, and other cities have their own mechanical contractor licensing programs. EPA Section 608 certification required for refrigerant handling (federal requirement).

No state GL mandate for HVAC contractors, but strongly recommended. Workers comp required for all employers. Cities may require GL insurance for local HVAC contractor licenses.
