General Contractor License Requirements in Idaho

No Statewide License Required

Idaho does not require a statewide general contractor license. Idaho does NOT require a statewide general contractor license — only registration. The Contractors Board requires registration for work over $2,000 but does not test competency. Some cities (Boise, Idaho Falls, Meridian) have additional local licensing or permit requirements. Licensed specialty contractors (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) are exempt from general contractor registration when working within their license scope.

Minimum $300,000 single-limit general liability insurance required. Policy must include products and completed operations coverage. Workers comp required for all employers; sole proprietors may file an exemption.
